Solid Waste Management is evolving into something that was unforeseen just a few short years ago. More than 500 State bills about recycling were introduced last year nationwide regarding such issues as: plastic bags, scrap tires, pharmaceuticals, electronics, producer responsibility and revisions to existing legislation. A national bottle bill is currently under consideration.

Global warming, green house gases, energy use and the environment have forced our attention to reusing recoverable materials. Concerns expressed by many solid waste management professionals have historically been ignored. However, this is changing.

Solutions to today’s considerable solid waste management challenges must
be efficient and cost effective, in addition to being environmentally responsible. There are no simple answers — and any solution will require a substantial commitment by government and citizens.

The Solid Waste Analysis Group's Alternative Plan presents their detailed research, and is intended for audiences involved in solid waste decision-making. The research focuses on options that address our solid waste management challenges well in to the future.
